Something Amazing I Guess

Something Amazing I Guess

“What are you waiting for kid … I don’t know something amazing I guess.” This has always been one of my favorite lines from The Incredibles. It hits at our human desire to see something amazing. To be a part of something amazing. A desire so central to us as human beings, that even Mr. Incredible, with all of his superpowers, is not immune to its draw.

The struggle is that life is not always amazing. Mr. Incredible before this scene has had a series of bad days. He lost his primary profession after he saved an individual who did not want to be saved. He was left in a dead end job that he despised, with a boss that did not understand his greatness. None of us can relate to that, can we? His children were struggling his wife was struggling. They were in desperate need of something amazing.

In our scripture this week, we find a woman in a similar spot. She has lived a long and lonely life. She had lived her life waiting on something amazing. In Luke chapter two we are told the story of Mary and Joseph bringing baby Jesus to the temple to fulfill what the law of Moses requires. It is in the temple square where we meet Anna, the prophet, who was waiting for something amazing. Let’s read her story now from Luke 2:36-38.

“There was also a prophet, Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived her life with her husband seven years and then was widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem” Luke 2:36-38

We are going to unpack both Anna’s moment with Jesus and her lifetime of waiting for Jesus. We’ll see that Jesus really is something amazing. The amazingness of Jesus offers us three timeless truths for our lives today.

  1. You can endure the wait

  2. You can miss Christmas but Christmas won’t miss you

  3. You can help others find something amazing.
