Station 2: Jesus is Betrayed and Arrested
Yesterday, we left off with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane with Peter, James, and John. We pick up the story in that same spot, but now the relative peace of of the garden is about to be broken by an armed group of men.
Today’s scripture shows Judas, who was one of Jesus’s disciples, leading an armed group of men to arrest Jesus. As you remember from earlier this incident of betrayal was foreshadowed by Jesus during the Last Supper when he said that one of his disciples would betray him. The moment has arrived. A mob has come to haul away the Prince of Peace.
Before reading today’s scripture take few minutes in prayer to ask God the following questions:
Lord in what ways have I betrayed you? [Pause]
How have I failed to live up to your calling for me? [Pause]
How many times have I called you “Rabbi” or teacher and then denied you? [Pause]
When have I been someone who has brought violence rather than someone who has fostered peace? [Pause]
Lord for all of these moments in my life have mercy on a me a sinner.
"Then, while [Jesus] was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived, accompanied by a crowd with swords and clubs, who had come from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders. His betrayer had arranged a signal with them, saying, "the man I shall kiss is the one; arrest him and lead him away securely." He came and immediately went over to him and said, "Rabbi." And he kissed him. At this they laid hands on him and arrested him."
(Mark 14: 43-46)
Take a minute or two to reflect on the passage of scripture you just read. Think about how Jesus, in the span of one evening, has gone from eating an intimate meal with his most trusted friends to being arrested by a mob lead by one of those friends. When you have finished your reflection close with the prayer below.
Lord Jesus Christ our God who was betrayed and whom we have betrayed have mercy on us this day. Forgive us for the ways we have betrayed your promises. Show us mercy for the times we chose violence over mercy. Have mercy on us sinners and continue to guide us on your path. Amen.
